See You at the Hyde Park Lounge

Well, we’ve moved to Boston (Hyde Park, to be exact), and Grace, Elijah and I have developed a nice rhythm. The Hyde Park Lounge is within walking distance from our house, and you can get a shot of bourbon with a 10-ounce Bud chaser for $3.50. They open at 8 AM, but I usually don’t get there until 10:00 or so, and as soon as the bartender (“Mac,” if you can believe it) sees us come in, he sets me up. It’s an old-time place, so they still allow smoking, despite it being illegal, but they don’t want to flaunt it too bad, and so keep the smoking to a minimum, which is good for Grace’s and Elijah’s lungs.

Anyway, for less than 20 bucks plus tip, I can get my morning started right, and ease into the afternoon. Elijah and Grace get to meet interesting people and see interesting things, and I get out of the house for a while.

The End is Near

Truly, The End must be soon upon us, as I just saw an advertisement for  Bud Extra (click for a web site with a synth drum beat vaguely reminiscent of Vanity 6's "Nasty Girls"),  a "beer with something extra."

Please choose which of the following ingredients is/are NOT present in this new, special beverage (multiple choices may apply):
a) Ginseng
b) Noni Juice
c) Methamphetamine
d) Guava Extract
e) Caffeine
f) Guarana
g) Clydesdale Extract
h) Beer

A tip of the hat to the marketing folks at Anheuser-Busch. I can picture this going through the roof. "Don't get bogged down when you get tanked up! Try Bud Extra, with benzedrine and crank to keep you tweaked when you're good and polluted!

I don't remember how I came across this, but it's a very funny and poignant first-person account of Mr. Benchley's move to NYC and his attempts to build a music career, with forays into his life in general. Read one, and I think you'll find yourself reading them all. UPDATE: This serial was actually fiction, and has now been published in novel form.
